Day-trip or Stopover
Just a stone’s throw from Windhoek - Come and see
Ibenstein Weavers on an outing. This is how
you find us: From the B 6 between Windhoek and Hosea Kutako
International Airport you turn onto the C 23 to Dordabis
(64 km of tar road). Then turn right, onto the MR 33 and
drive straight through Dordabis, turn left at the
T-junction and follow the signboards to the weaving
workshop on the last 4 km of gravel road. The Cave of Farm Arnhem, well known for its colonies of bats, is less than 60 km away from us. The cave has a length of 4.5 km and can be toured with a guide by prior arrangement.
Stopover at the edge of the Kalahari - Come and visit Ibenstein Weavers on your way to the south of Namibia. Instead of taking the tar road via Rehoboth to Mariental you can travel on well-kept gravel roads, suitable for any city car, through the uniquely beautiful scenery of the Kalahari: Red sand dunes, salt and clay pans, gnarled old camelthorn trees in the midst of yellow savannah grasses. This is the realm of animals like Gemsbok or Springbok and birds like Ostrich or Owl.
After you have seen how we make fabrics from 'Kalahari Silk' you may want to proceed to Leonardville (150 km from Dordabis) and visit the 'Kalahari Wild Silk Company' . Staffers of this very interesting aid project will gladly show you how silk thread is derived from the cocoon of a silkworm.
